In the second one-day match against Australia A in Kanpur on October 3 (Friday), Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck, fresh off a scorching Asia Cup 2025 performance.
With 314 runs in seven innings, the speedy left-hander finished as the Asia Cup’s top run scorer and was the tournament’s most impressive batter. He won Player of the Series after hitting a stunning 200 and averaging 44.85.
He was not present at the first India A vs. Australia A match, in which the home team amassed 413/6 and decisively defeated the visitors by 171 runs. Priyansh Arya, who had smashed a 101 off just 84 balls in the match, was replaced by Abhishek Sharma in the starting lineup.
Abhishek Sharma, who is already a mainstay in India’s T20I team, would have wanted to continue his recent success in the 50-over format and make a stronger case for an ODI call-up. Rather, he was caught in the opening ball of the second over by right-arm seamer Jack Edwards. After his removal, India A collapsed to 17/3 in six overs, with captain Shreyas Iyer (8) and Prabhsimran Singh (1) also falling early.
In his 62 List A games thus far, Abhishek Sharma has amassed 2014 runs at an average of 33.01, including eight fifties and four hundreds.
However, the path to India’s ODI XI is congested. In addition to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill continue to be the preferred openers.
Abhishek Sharma will require more than just T20 fireworks if he is to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup; he must quickly and steadily accumulate runs in this format.
