When the roster for the current West Indies series was named, Ravindra Jadeja admitted that he was unaware of his vice-captaincy until he noticed the word “VC” next to his name on the team sheet. During the two-match Test series against the West Indies, Jadeja is serving as Shubman Gill’s stand-in.
In addition, Jadeja said that he was honoured to be in a leadership role and that he would be happy to assist in any way possible if the captain or the backroom crew needed to discuss anything significant.
“They remained silent towards me. Only when the team was announced did I notice ‘VC’ next to my name. At the end of the day, you share your experience for the benefit of the team. They respected me. I have been given the task by the management, coach, and captain.
In a video produced by ICC, Jadeja said, “I am always happy to contribute whenever the team needs anything regarding team planning or anything else.”
The star all-rounder acknowledged that the England series gave him great confidence in his abilities. “I want to contribute with bat and ball in this series as well,” he said in closing.
“As a player, my confidence grows. You gain confidence every time you perform in England. I’m hoping to carry that confidence into this series, hit some runs, and take some wickets,” he continued.
On the first day of the series-opening match, India bowled the visiting team out for 162 in 44.1 overs. Jadeja was wicketless in the three overs he bowled, but Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, who were both new-ball bowlers, were outstanding with three and four wickets, respectively.
With KL Rahul (53* off 114) and Shubman Gill (18* off 42) occupying the crease, the hosts fell behind by 41 runs at stumps, falling behind 121/2. The two hitters who fell were Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
