Asif Mahmud, Bangladesh’s sports advisor, has made a bold remark on star cricketer Shakib Al Hasan and his future in terms of representing Bangladesh internationally. Shakib won’t be eligible to wear the national team’s jersey again after making his final appearance in October 2024.
Shakib Al Hasan will never again play for Bangladesh, according to Mahmud. The advisor’s remarks followed Shakib’s social media birthday greeting for ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Before being removed, Shakib Al Hasan was a member of parliament for the Awami League from January to August of 2024.
Mahmud has previously posted updates on Shakib’s situation on his official Facebook page. In his nearly instantaneous response to the comment, the all-rounder shared his version of events, expressed his respect and affection for the nation, and discussed what it meant to him to play for the Bangla Tigers at the top level of international cricket.
“You have all been very abusive to me since I haven’t helped one person get better. However, I was correct. “The conversation is over,” the message stated.
“So, someone has finally acknowledged that he is the reason I will never be able to wear the Bangladeshi jersey again and that I will never be able to play for Bangladesh again. One day, I might go back to my motherland. In his reply, Shakib Al Hasan said, “I love you, Bangladesh.”
Speaking to Channel 24 in Dhaka, Mahmud reaffirmed his position and stated that he would notify the Bangladesh Cricket Board of the decision as soon as possible.
“He cannot fly the flag of Bangladesh. He will not be able to wear the Bangladesh jersey because of me. Perhaps I haven’t told the BCB previously, but I’ve made it obvious to them that Shakib Al Hasan will never be allowed to play for Bangladesh again,” he said.
Since he last played for Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan has been involved in the domestic franchise circuit.
In the Caribbean Premier League 2025, he most recently played for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. The Tigers’ best all-around player has represented the nation in 129 T20Is, 247 ODIs, and 71 Test matches. In 2006, he made his debut on the international scene.
