Glenn Maxwell out after nets injury

Glenn Maxwell was unable to play in the three-match T20I series against hosts New Zealand due to an unusual injury he sustained in the nets at Mount Maunganui. Mitch Owen bowled to Maxwell, and the 36-year-old was smacked hard on the forearm. Josh Philippe has been called up by Cricket Australia selectors to replace him after scans revealed a fracture.

Batting in the adjacent net, Matthew Short described what happened. “Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed it. It’s quite noisy and echoy since we’re training beneath a marquee,” Short told cricket.com.au. “I witnessed Owen smoking it, and in the aftermath, Maxi was struck in the wrist. It sounded awful.

“There’s no doubt that Owen is not the person you want to bowl to during T20 training. Maxi has experienced it (severe injuries) a few times already. He was a little let down, but it’s the same as any other injury. I have no doubt that he will overcome it.

Glenn Maxwell stellar international career has been marred by a slew of setbacks, this the most recent.

Marcus Stoinis will probably benefit from Glenn Maxwell loss.

When his friend fell on him at a birthday celebration three years ago, he broke his leg. Maxwell still has to deal with the surgery that was necessary for the injury. Maxwell had a concussion after falling off a golf cart during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Glenn Maxwell is now in a race against time to be well for the start of the Twenty20 International series against India, which kicks off in Canberra on October 29. Australia’s preparation for the T20 World Cup the following year was to be heightened by these two series. Alongside fellow big-hitters Owen and Tim David, the 36-year-old Stoinis, who hasn’t played for Australia in T20I since November of last year, is probably going to start in the middle-order.
