Chris Woakes calls time on international cricket career

Chris Woakes, an all-rounder for England, announced his retirement from international cricket on social media on Monday, September 29.

Chris Woakes , who spent 14 years playing for England, played his final international match in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 during the fifth Test match against India. The match is noted for Chris Woakes’ bravery and determination in coming out to bat on the last day despite having a shattered arm. Notably, the cricket player has stated that he would always treasure the moment with a great sense of pleasure and honour and that he feels blessed to be a member of the English cricketing circles since his international debut.

Chris Woakes posted an announcement on his official Instagram account, saying, “The time has come, and I’ve decided that the time is right for me to retire from international cricket.”

“I feel extremely fortunate to have fulfilled my childhood aspirations of playing for England, which began when I was a child daydreaming in the backyard. I’ll look back on the last 15 years of playing for England, donning the Three Lions, and sharing the pitch with teammates—many of whom have become lifetime friends—with the utmost pride,” he continued.

Taking home two World Cups was incredible: Chris Woakes

Notably, in the 2011 Ashes, the pace bowling all-rounder made his debut against Australia in Australia. He was a member of the teams that won the renowned ODI World Cup in 2019 and the Twenty22 T20 World Cup, which the Three Lions won under Jos Buttler’s leadership, during his illustrious career for England. Woakes has also made it clear that he would keep playing domestic cricket for Warwickshire, his county team.

“My 2011 Australian debut seems like it was yesterday, but when you’re having a good time, time flies. I never imagined that I would lift two World Cups and play in some incredible Ashes series, and I will always cherish the experiences and celebrations I had with my teammates,” Woakes added.

“Thank you to all of the supporters, especially the Barmy Army, for their fervour, applause, and faith. To my coaches, teammates, and all the people behind the scenes who helped me play for my nation, both with England and Warwickshire, your friendship and support have meant the world to me. In the near future, I hope to continue playing county cricket and look into further franchise opportunities,” he said.
