The management of the Indian team has been pleased with Jasprit Bumrah‘s performances, pointing out that the role he was given in the UAE was very demanding. The right-arm bowler has recorded an economy rate of 8.36 in his three Asia Cup 2025 appearances so far, despite taking just three wickets in those three games.
Bumrah has been required to deliver three overs during the powerplay and return for his fourth in the final overs in each of those matches. Notably, he had not bowled three of the first six overs in a Twenty20 International since 2019. This was before India’s opening match against the United Arab Emirates.
“He has a very difficult assignment to complete. Bowlers who bowl all three overs in the powerplay are uncommon in this style. Thus, it’s also very taxing. On the eve of the Super Four match against Bangladesh, Ryan ten Doeschate stated, “But we feel it’s the right amount of work going into the Test match [against West Indies] and obviously the importance of this competition as well,” according to ESPNcricinfo.
After taking 1 for 19 against the UAE, Bumrah went on to take 2 for 28 against Pakistan in India’s group-stage match.
However, the 31-year-old went wicketless and let up 45 runs in their Super Four matchup with their bitter rivals.
“Against Pakistan the other night, he didn’t give his best performance. He is bowling the first three overs, the two [fielders] out, the final over, and the second last over where men are leaving, but we also know that he is doing a very difficult job. On certain days, he will go for runs if he doesn’t take any wickets. The former Dutch cricket player stated, “But we feel that right now that’s the best job in terms of how we set up the team, obviously with two seamers and going spin-heavy.”
The pacer, who was rested for India’s last group-stage encounter against Oman, has bowled 11 overs in the Asia Cup thus far. He was born in Ahmedabad. If India get it to the final, he is anticipated to bowl 12 more overs. According to team management, it is unlikely that he will be rested for any more tournament games.
“It is highly improbable that you [India] will know you have qualified going into the last match. Therefore, I would conclude that he is unlikely to obtain any rest. In addition, we have a Test match that begins [next] Thursday. Therefore, it’s actually pretty good preparation for managing the workload. Therefore, we can consider it if we have the luxury of having the choice to rest Bumrah in the last game. We will, however, select our best team for each game, in my opinion. He clearly fits that description,” ten Doeschate remarked.
