‘By then Dhoni Mania was so big that you had to pick him' Dinesh Karthik discusses MS Dhoni replacing him.

MS Dhoni was one of India’s greatest cricketers. He won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy as one of India’s finest leaders.

Dinesh Karthik is one of many players who have struggled to play for India due to Dhoni’s greatness. 37-year-old Karthik recently spoke about being Dhoni’s understudy.

Before him, I debuted. After an India A tour, I was selected for the Indian team. They picked me for the Indian team because I did well. From there, they travelled again. In an ODI tournament, he smashed boundaries and sixes. It was that kind of stuff the world was still getting used to.

“They say he’s extraordinary.” Naturally, I joined the Indian squad, but Dhoni fanaticism was so great that you had to pick him. He succeeded in all formats after replacing me. He continued, “It’s about taking chances.”

He become a brand overnight: Dinesh Karthik

After a strong India A trip, Dinesh Karthik joined the Indian team before MS Dhoni. Since Dhoni’s spectacular innings became famous, Karthik struggled to make the Indian team.

Karthik also talked about taking his chances after Dhoni become a “brand.” “He was doing well for himself.” He was comfortable in the team. He didn’t err. In ODIs, he scored a hundred. In Test cricket, he scored 85. He kept well. He became a brand overnight, most importantly. They pursued him. From the start, he was big. The 37-year-old said, “I was always looking for possibilities while studying.”
