Australia Fined for Slow Over-Rate in Women’s 2nd ODI vs India 2025

For maintaining a slow over-rate in the second ODI against India at New Chandigarh on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, the Australian women’s team was penalised 10% of their match fee. Even when allowances were taken into account, Australia still missed the required objective by two overs, which led to the fine.

Third umpire Lauren Agenbag, fourth umpire Gayathri Venugopalan, and on-field umpires Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan made the accusation. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses minimum over-rate offences, match referee G.S. Lakshmi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees assessed the sanction.

Players are penalised 5% of their match fee under this rule for each time their team fails. In order to avoid a formal hearing, Australian captain Alyssa Healy pleaded guilty to the violation and accepted the sentence.

The slow over-rate penalty made matters worse for Australia, which ultimately suffered a historic loss as India Women crushed the visitors by 102 runs, giving them the biggest run-loss in Women’s ODI history. The 1973 Women’s Cricket World Cup loss to England by 92 runs set the previous record.

Smriti Mandhana, the star batswoman for India, was the highlight of the day with an incredible 117-run innings off of just 91 balls. She set the tone for India’s dominant total with a knock that included 14 boundaries and four sixes. Mandhana won Player of the Match for her aggressive style, which placed Australia under tremendous pressure.

Bowler Kranti Gaud maintained her remarkable ascent in international cricket while bolstering Mandhana’s genius. Gaud, who demolished Australia’s middle order with her controlled spell, took three vital wickets for just 28 runs in her ODI debut earlier this year, guaranteeing India’s supremacy throughout the match.

India celebrated one of their most memorable ODI wins, but Australia will have to rapidly regroup as a result of the outcome.

Australia won the opening game of the three-game series by eight wickets, but now that they have lost the second game, the series is tied at one before the final. On September 20, the series’ third and final match will take place in Delhi.
