Despite his Player of the Match effort (89 off 46) in the opening Twenty20 International of the three-match series between England and Ireland, Phil Salt has acknowledged that he is not entirely sure if he will be able to return to England’s ODI team. Notably, the Three Lions have officially ignored Salt for the one-dayers by playing six ODIs since his last outing in 50 overs.
On Wednesday, September 17, Phil Salt voiced his feelings following his team’s four-wicket victory.
Prior to being removed from the ODI lineup, the top-order batsman said that he was unable to meet the team management’s standards. He said that although he was unhappy, he could understand the rationale for being eliminated to some extent.
“To be honest, not many. There isn’t much else I can say. I was instructed to start in fifth gear, play a specific style, and be extremely aggressive, much like in Twenty20 cricket. One-day cricket isn’t always so simple, but I did my best. I failed to score the necessary number of runs to secure a spot in 50-over cricket while attempting to accomplish so. I was disappointed, but I could understand. The Independent cited Salt as stating, “I nailed my colours to the mast, that’s what the team wanted of me, and it didn’t quite work out.”
The offensive opener also discussed his understanding with Jos Buttler, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter and his batting partner. The Englishman also mentioned how nicely they both played off one another as they carried out their individual batsmanships.
We are fairly good at bouncing off one another. We are acquainted. Jos usually comes in and takes care of himself, but I’m always the one that wants to be aggressive right away, tossing the opening punches if you will. The situation is somewhat one-two. Perhaps having two men who can get you off to a great start early on is something that many opening partnerships lack,” Phil Salt said.
Phil Salt broke numerous records with an incredible unbeaten 141 off 60 against the Proteas before his 89-run thump. In that specific match, England defeated South Africa by 146 runs after surpassing the 300-run threshold.
