For the last two rounds of the 2025 County Championship, Hampshire has hired Washington Sundar, an all-round spin bowler from India. The 25-year-old will try to do his best for Hampshire in their games against Somerset and Surrey later this month. He was not included in India’s current Asia Cup team.
In the spin department, India’s selectors chose Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakaravarthy despite the fact that he was one of the probables for the Asia Cup. Sundar has resorted to county cricket in an effort to stay match-fit and hold onto his spot in the Indian Test team. He made his debut for Lancashire against Northamptonshire in 2022, taking five wickets.
For the last two rounds of the Rothesay County Championship, Hampshire will be joined by Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar. With a five-for in his debut against Northamptonshire, Sundar will be playing his first county cricket match since 2022, when he played for Lancashire in the County Championship and One Day Cup. Hampshire confirmed Sundar’s presence in an official statement.
Bringing Washington Sundar to the club is a pleasure: Giles White
After an outstanding Test series against England earlier this summer, the all-rounder enters the County Championship. Washington Sundar amassed 284 runs at an average of 47.33 in four games, including a historic century at Old Trafford that enabled India avoid defeat in the fourth Test. He took seven wickets with the ball. Giles White, the director of cricket for Hampshire, made the announcement of the deal while pointing out Sundar’s possible impact on the team’s final two games.
Bringing Washington Sundar to the club for the County Championship makes us very happy. With two important matches against Somerset and Surrey coming up, he will be crucial, according to White’s statement. He had a great series against England this summer.
Hampshire, meanwhile, wants to end the season on a high note. Notably, the squad will play Somerset at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton from September 15–18. From September 24–27, they will play the reigning champions, Surrey, at the Utilita Bowl. Sundar has played 40 games in his first-class career, capturing 91 wickets and amassing 1,885 runs at an average of 34. In 2024, he bowled his best figures (7/59) against New Zealand in Pune.
