As the Indian team prepares to defend their championship in the 17th Asia Cup, Robin Uthappa, the winner of the T20 World Cup, cautioned them against complacency.
Along with Pakistan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates, the Men in Blue are in Group A. From each group, two teams will advance to the Super Four stage.
Even though India is the clear favourite to win Group A and advance to the next round, Uthappa doesn’t want the squad captained by Suryakumar Yadav to lose their focus when playing teams that aren’t, at least on paper, on par with them.
“I would make sure they treat every game with respect because I believe complacency is dangerous. Because the players are of such high calibre, you may occasionally let your foot off the pedal and think, “Listen, we’ll dominate, so you can relax.” They must keep an eye out for that,” Uthappa stated in an interview with Sony Sports.
You want to maintain a light atmosphere in the dressing room and ensure that everyone gets along: Uthappa
With certain players trying to solidify their spot in the squad before the 2026 T20 World Cup, Uthappa thinks it will be critical for the Indian team to maintain a positive environment in the locker room. According to the former India opener, it would be crucial to have a dressing room free of insecurity and egos.
“They must ensure that the team is in excellent health. Two or three additional players in this group might be the main candidates for the World Cup the following year. Therefore, you want everyone to get along, maintain a light atmosphere in the dressing room, and play for one another,” he continued.
Afghanistan can pose a threat against India, according to Uthappa, particularly with their potent bowling lineup.
“A team like Afghanistan, where the bowling is really good, can put pressure on them,” Uthappa said.
