Prithvi Shaw faces ₹100 fine from Mumbai court for reply delay in case

A Dindoshi sessions court in Mumbai fined young Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw INR 100 for neglecting to respond to a molestation case filed by social media personality Sapna Gill. After Prithvi Shaw legal team continually requested adjournments despite being offered several chances, including a final opportunity on June 13, the court imposed the minimal sentence on September 9, 2025.

The dispute stems from an incident that happened at a pub in Andheri, Mumbai, on February 15, 2023. After an altercation over a selfie request allegedly descended into violence, Gill accused Shaw of assault and molestation. Over the past two years, the case has taken several legal turns, with both parties putting up opposing arguments, even though Shaw’s team has stated that Gill and her accomplices were the aggressors.

At first, Sapna Gill went to the police to file a First Information Report (FIR). But in April 2023, after nothing was done, she went to the Andheri magistrate’s court. Despite acknowledging the filing delay, the magistrate ruled that the accusations were significant enough to warrant additional investigation and instructed the Santacruz police station to conduct an investigation in accordance with Section 202 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Gill later filed a criminal revision petition before the Dindoshi sessions court after being dissatisfied with the decision to not submit a formal complaint.

Gill’s attorney charges Prithvi Shaw legal team with purposefully prolonging the case.

Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan, her attorney, has charged Shaw’s legal team with purposefully prolonging the process. In June 2025, the sessions court itself had told Shaw that he would face repercussions if he did not reply. Judge S. M. Agarkar acknowledged the ongoing delay on September 9 but gave Gill one more opportunity to comply, subject to the INR 100 fee.

Police reports state that at around one in the morning, Gill’s buddy Shobit Thakur had asked Shaw for selfies on several occasions. Shaw first consented, but subsequently turned down more requests, which led to a fight. Reports state that after Shaw and his companion Ashish Yadav left, the argument intensified despite Thakur’s request to vacate the property. Police have filed a case against Gill and Thakur after they attacked Yadav while Shaw allegedly managed to flee. In February 2023, Gill was temporarily arrested before obtaining bail.

Gill presented an alternative version in her counter-complaint. She claimed that once she and Thakur were invited to Shaw and Yadav’s VIP table, everything descended into violence when they demanded selfies. She eventually filed accusations of assault, molestation, and outraging her modesty after accusing Shaw of assaulting Thakur and harassing her after she stepped in.
