Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of Team India, responded humorously to comparisons between leading a bilateral series and a multi-nation tournament. The Mumbai native will captain the Men in Blue in the Asia Cup 2025, which will be the team’s first significant short-format match since he succeeded Rohit Sharma after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar said he didn’t see the need to change a winning formula, implying that the procedures used in bilateral competitions could also work in prestigious tournaments. He was also taken aback by the notion that India was the clear favourite to win the tournament. With just two losses in 15 games as captain, his record as India’s full-time T20I skipper has been praised.
“So far, sir, everything is going smoothly. Toh kyu bina matlab ka ungli karna hai? (Why muddle needlessly?) We will keep doing and adhering to the same actions we have taken in each of the bilaterals thus far. At the press conference prior to the 2025 Asia Cup, Suryakumar stated, “If some things are working, that means we are moving in the right direction.”
“Who informed you of this? This was not heard by me. Yes, we have been playing T20 cricket as a team for a while now, but we arrived early,” he continued.
Is Sanju Samson going to play?
The right-handed hitter was also questioned over the likelihood that Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter, would be included in the starting lineup for the forthcoming match. He laughed in response, then gave a reassuring response. Since the squad announcement, which also confirmed Shubman Gill’s return and appointment as the 20-over team’s vice-captain, Samson’s selection has continued to be a hot topic of conversation.
“The playing XI will be texted to you. In fact, we are doing a terrific job of caring for him. We will make the appropriate choice tomorrow, so don’t worry,” Suryakumar remarked.
India, who won the Asia Cup in 2023, is the reigning champion going into the 2025 tournament. The squad will try to win a record-tying ninth championship, which would be their second victory in the T20 edition of the competition. On September 10, they will take on the hosts, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to start their campaign.
