On Sunday, September 7, Cricket Scotland announced that head coach Doug Watson has been relieved of his responsibilities for the men’s national team. The decision was made “after a review of recent results and subsequent planning around future fixtures and allocation of budget,” the statement said.
In March 2023, Doug Watson was named temporary head coach; the following year, he was named permanent head coach. He took the team to the T20 World Cup 2024, where they overcame Oman and Namibia before just losing out on a spot in the Super 8s. He also led the squad to the World Cup Qualifiers, where they defeated three full members.
With 30 points from 24 games, Scotland leads the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 points standings at the moment. They have won two of their four games in their most recent tri-series against Canada and Namibia; the other games were postponed because of rain.
“Even though I’m sad to be leaving, I’ll carry a lot of happy memories of my time with the company with me. Working with this team and coaching staff has been enjoyable, and I’m glad to be leaving with the team at the top of the ICC CWCL2 qualification table.
However, I’m now looking forward to spending more time with my family,” Doug Watson stated as he was leaving.
It is a privilege to have collaborated with Cricket Scotland, and I shall keep a careful eye on their future developments. I hope that everyone involved has continued success in the future.
Prior to their next international assignment, a League 2 series in Namibia in March 2026, Scotland will select a new head coach. They failed to get it to the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India the following year.
