Australia’s fast bowler Mitchell Starc made the decision to retire from T20 Internationals (T20I) six months or so before the next T20 World Cup. Mitchell Starc was once again anticipated to spearhead Australia’s bowling attack during the T20 World Cup last year, but that will not be the case.
While discussing his choice with fellow quicks Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and head coach Andrew McDonald, Starc acknowledged that he neglected to notify T20I captain Mitchell Marsh.
“I should have called Mitchy, probably. He told me via text that Instagram is how he learnt about it. I didn’t tell the captain, which made me feel horrible. He apologised to Cricket.com.au, Mitchy.
Given that Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, and Marcus Stoinis had all departed from One-Day Internationals (ODI), Mitchell Starc acknowledged that he wasn’t entirely sure which white-ball format to abandon.
However, the dilemma was ultimately resolved when it was decided to play the ODI World Cup in 2027 rather than the T20 World Cup the following year.
“I umm-ed and ahh-ed about which was the right [format] to put to the side,” said Mitchell Starc.
“I didn’t want to hold up the slot if I wasn’t going to be considered for 2027. I still believe I have a lot to contribute to the ODI team. I had given it some thought. I think it was probably enjoyable. I am currently 35 years old, and tests have always been and will continue to be my top focus.
Mitchell Starc will not participate in the three-match T20I series against New Zealand starting on October 1 due to his retirement. He will, however, play in the ODI series against India, which begins in Perth on October 19.
