R Ashwin, a former Indian spinner, praised England player Sam Billings for his grounded demeanour in spite of his enormous wealth. Regarding the lifestyle of the wicketkeeper-batter, Ashwin said that despite his immense fortune, Billings maintains his modesty.
In 30 Indian Premier League (IPL) games, Billings has amassed 503 runs at a strike rate of less than 130 and an average of less than 20. After playing with the Delhi Daredevils (formerly the Delhi Capitals) from 2016 to 2017, he spent the following two seasons with the Chennai Super Kings. He played for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022.
“Sam Billings is not your typical individual. Nearly half of Kent is his. We have maids and cooks in our homes, but having a chef is really important in those nations. Housekeeping, laundry, and other tasks are handled by different persons in his home. “He’s a really, really straightforward guy, but he comes from that background,” R Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat.
With a scorching 56 off 23 balls in his debut, Billings got off to a great start to his CSK career. But after that, he had trouble staying consistent, scoring only 52 runs in his following nine innings. In the end, he had a dismal season-ending average of 13.50.
“A player like Sam Billings has excelled in the ILT20 and is popular in other forms. I recall that he did well for CSK for a couple of games but was unable to maintain that level of play.
He was therefore not in the team,” R Ashwin stated.
“These international players are under a lot of strain. Because you will have to perform if a team is permitted to have four international players. I feel a lot of pressure because of the level of professionalism. “You will be removed from the team if you don’t perform in two or three games,” he continued.
Billings recently led the Oval Invincibles to a 26-run victory over the Trent Rockets in the Hundred 2025 final. With this victory, Billings has now participated in five T20 championship seasons.
