R Ashwin claimed that even though he was vying for a slot in the starting lineup against the famous Muttiah Muralitharan, he had the confidence in himself to establish himself at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during his first tenure with the team.
During the Border-Gavaskar series, Ashwin had announced his retirement from international cricket. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner declared his retirement from Indian cricket on Wednesday, August 27. He will now be searching for opportunities to play in international competitions.
Ashwin recently disclosed how much he enjoys keeping his doubters quiet. The seasoned veteran recalled how people were sceptical of him when he first joined CSK because they thought he wouldn’t be able to make an impression with Muttiah Muralitharan, the renowned off-spinner. The 38-year-old, though, was able to hold his own and make an impression.
“I would have been shocked if someone had predicted that I would accomplish so much at the beginning of my career. But when you initially strive to succeed, everyone will tell you that “he’s too big to fit in the glove, too ambitious, and an overthinker.” I’ve heard a lot of things like that about myself. But if I don’t have ambition for my own life, then who will?” On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated.
“Muttiah Muralitharan was the off-spinner even when I played for CSK.
Many people told me, “There is no way two off-spinners will play,” when he was selected. I wanted to show people that I was wrong by saying, ‘I’ll make them play two off-spinners,’ but I had this problem. That’s what I consider my confidence. I’ve even stated that I’ll perform before Muralitharan. I’m not disparaging Muralitharan in any way. I’m just attempting to match his level,” Ashwin continued.
With 287 international appearances and 765 wickets, Ashwin concluded his career. In contrast, he claimed 187 wickets in 220 IPL games. In addition to his impressive bowling stats in all forms, Ashwin amassed six Test cricket hundreds.
