Wanindu Hasaranga‘s hamstring injury has forced him to miss the T20I series against Zimbabwe, which has hampered Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup preparations. He missed the July T20I series against Bangladesh in Colombo due to the same injury. Wanindu Hasaranga was still recuperating from the injury, hence his name was omitted from Sri Lanka’s 16-man roster for the two-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.
Before the T20I series begins in the first week of September, the two ODIs will be played on August 29 and August 31, respectively. In the continental competition, Sri Lanka is grouped with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong.
Now, Wanindu Hasaranga will try to be better in time for the Asia Cup in 2025, which kicks off on September 9.
Charith Asalanka will return to the team as captain for the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with seasoned players Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and Dasun Shanaka offering stability. Young all-rounders Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis will have to step up as spin-bowling all-rounders in Wanindu Hasaranga absence. Additionally, the tour gives peripheral players like Vishen Halambage and Kamil Mishara a chance to make an impression on the selectors in the hopes of being included in the Asia Cup squad.
Dushmantha Chameera will be the centre of attention in the seam-bowling department as he looks to use his experience to lead the charge. Players like Nuwan Thushara and Matheesha Pathirana, who will play a significant part in the Asia Cup, will try to hone their abilities against the Chevrons. After losing the Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh 1-2, Sri Lanka will try to recover well.
