Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin announced his retirement from the franchise-based competition on August 27, 2025, ending his 16-season career in the Indian Premier competition. The Jos Buttler non-striker end run out from the 2019 IPL is the most famous of the many memorable IPL situations the cunning off-spinner has participated in.
At the end of the 12th over, the Rajasthan Royals had scored 105 for the loss of just one wicket, putting them in a dominant position as they chased 185 for victory. By then, Buttler had hit two sixes and ten fours, adding 69 runs to the total. When Ashwin caught the Englishman backing up too far at the non-striker’s end on the fourth ball of the thirteenth over, controversy broke out.
The on-field umpire sent the decision upstairs after Ashwin quickly dislodged the bails and appealed.
Buttler raced back to the pavilion in complete surprise after the final verdict went in favour of Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings), leaving him furious. The team from Punjab won the match by a margin of 14 runs.
Since the incident, social media has gone crazy. Many claimed that Ashwin’s actions were appropriate and entirely compliant with the game’s rules, while others contended that they went against the spirit of the game. Later, Ashwin himself came out and defended his acts by claiming that they were within the regulations and that he would do it again if given the chance.
Regarding Ashwin’s IPL stats, he finished his career with 187 wickets at a modest economy rate of 7.20 in 221 games. Along with all of his accomplishments with the ball, Ashwin has amassed 833 runs and a half-century in the tournament.
