[Watch] 'Maybe intentional' - Australian keeper on Dhoni's 'genius' stumping

Alex Carey, an Australian wicketkeeper, recently remarked on MS Dhoni’s “genius” and his outstanding wicketkeeping skills.

Carey brought up an example from India’s 2016 white-ball visit of Australia’s second Twenty20 International. James Faulkner fell off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling as a result of the bizarre stumping.

Carey thought the attempt was deliberate and expertly performed by the then-Indian captain, even though the ball deflected off Dhoni’s pads after a thick inside-edge before crashing into the stumps.

Since Dhoni is a genius, he most likely meant it. Given that it is MS, this is most likely deliberate. Congratulations, Faulkner. Deflect back onto the stumps after striking the pad. “And I believe we have a stumping,” Carey said in an interview with cricket.com.au.

Speaking of the game, India won by 27 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground after effectively defending 185. In addition to taking out Faulkner, Dhoni also played a part in Aaron Finch’s run-out (74 off 48), Chris Lynn’s wicket (2 off 4), and Glenn Maxwell’s stumping (1 off 2) during that match.

In the opening innings, he even batted 14 off 9 runs. Virat Kohli’s undefeated 33-ball 59 earned him the title of Player of the Match. Along with Jasprit Bumrah (2/37 in four overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/37 in four overs), Rohit Sharma was the top scorer for the Men in Blue with 60 off 47.

In case you were unaware, Ruturaj Gaikwad had previously stated during the 2025 Indian Premier League that Dhoni would not be practicing wicketkeeping during the season. Alyssa Healy had previously stated that she would follow Dhoni’s wicketkeeping tips rather than Adam Gilchrist’s. In cricket, MS is still recognised as one of the best wicketkeepers in the world.
