One of the important cricket players who was present in the dressing room when Greg Chappell, the Indian team’s head coach, caused chaos was Virender Sehwag. Perhaps the most contentious head coach the Indian team has ever had, Chappell gained notoriety for frequently switching up the lineups and playing combinations.
Sehwag recently travelled back in time to disclose one of the tense exchanges he had with the coach at the time. The Delhi batsman recalls the time Chappell was about to dismiss him for failing to comply with his explicit orders. Chappell even threatened to remove Sehwag from the team if he didn’t follow his instructions or if the opening didn’t score runs. Rahul Dravid also intervened in the scene to prevent the argument from continuing.
“I was once hurt by Greg Chappell’s remarks. I was going through a difficult time. “You won’t score runs if you don’t move your feet,” he told me. “Greg, I have over 6000 runs with an average of over 50,” I retorted. However, he stated, “It doesn’t matter.” We got into a heated disagreement. Rahul Dravid then intervened to keep us apart. Greg warned me, “Make sure you score, or I’ll drop you,” as I was about to bat. I scored 184 runs by the end of the second session. “Tell your coach not to come near me,” Sehwag stated on The Life Savers Show after telling Rahul Dravid to do so.
Perhaps the most successful opener in India’s lengthy history of Test cricket is Sehwag.
Sehwag averages an incredible 49.34 in the format, having amassed 8586 runs in just 104 Test matches. Besides putting on a show with the bat, he scored 23 centuries and 32 half-centuries. He could strike the ball powerfully from the first ‘go’. In addition to his four double hundreds, he has two triple hundreds, which is the most for an Indian hitter.
In addition, he currently enjoys his time spent commentating at important cricket matches and competitions around the globe. In the 2016 and 2017 Indian Premier League seasons, when Glenn Maxwell and Ravichandran Ashwin were captains, the 46-year-old also held a coaching role while playing for Kings XI Punjab (now known as the Punjab Kings).
