According to reports, Rohit Sharma, India’s batting mainstay and ODI captain, would not play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He may make his final ODI debut in the forthcoming series against Australia in October 2025, capping an illustrious career.
For more than ten years, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been the key players in Indian ODI cricket. Together, they have led the squad through several tournaments, breaking batting records and performing well in the most important games. The administration of the Indian team, however, is reportedly now concentrating on developing younger players for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
Three ODIs are scheduled for October 19, 23, and 25 of the October 2025 trip of Australia. According to reports, before the series starts, Rohit Sharma and Kohli might both formally announce their ODI fates.
If verified, it will be the final opportunity for Indian fans to watch Rohit Sharma play in the 50-over format.
Don’t expect them to play: Gavaskar Sunil
The choice is seen as a component of India’s long-range plan. The Nagpur native will be forty years old by 2027, and managing workload and staying active are anticipated to be major concerns. According to reports, the team’s management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, wants to make sure that the upcoming generation of players receives international recognition well in advance of the World Cup. India’s current Test captain, Shubman Gill, who was just selected as the Asia Cup team’s vice captain, is the clear favourite to take Rohit Sharma place as ODI captain.
During his 273 appearances in ODI matches, Rohit amassed 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76, with 32 hundreds and 58 half-centuries. He is among the top batsmen in this format because of his three double hundreds in ODIs. He most recently led India to victory in the Champions Trophy in Dubai. According to renowned Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar, the two will not be included in the team for the 2027 ICC tournament.
“They have performed incredibly well in this game type. Once more, the 2027 World Cup is likely to be considered by the selection committee. They’ll be considering whether they can make the squad for the 2027 World Cup. Will they be able to continue contributing in the same manner as before? That’s what the selecting committee will be thinking. Both of them will be present if the selection committee determines that “yes, they can.” They won’t be playing, in my opinion. I’m being completely truthful. Even God won’t be able to drop them in the coming year or so if they find a deep vein of form and continue to score hundreds and hundreds,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
