Willey powers Trent Rockets to big win

On Tuesday, August 19, the Trent Rockets won by a resounding seven wickets at Nottingham, led by David Willey. The captain limited the Manchester Originals to a pitiful 98 by taking three wickets in a stingy effort (3 for 11). With 26 balls remaining, the Rockets easily removed the total, moving them up to second place in the standings.

David Willey trapped young Ben McKinney LBW in the first set of the match. It brought Phil Salt and Jos Buttler, two of the Originals’ best hitters, to the crease. Rachin Ravindra was pursued by Willey with a peach in order to capture him for a golden duck.

Salt and Heinrich Klaasen were unable to find any timing, thus George Linde kept the Rockets’ score at bay. Rehan Ahmed, who enticed the batters into big shots while just nestled in the hands of the boundary riders, put a stop to their troubles. Marcus Stoinis entered the wickets column with the dismissal of Noor Ahmad, while Sam Cook removed Matthew Hurst and Scott Currie.

With three swift boundaries, the latter started to appear fluid, but he was nicked behind after a wild swing against David Willey technique.

Lewis Gregory was the only batter who fought in the midst of the usual wicket-fall. He started slowly but picked up speed in the final ten balls of the innings, hitting a pair of fours and sixes. In this phase, he brought the Originals near to 100 with 26 runs off his own bat.

The Originals quickly discovered that it wasn’t a 98 for 8 pitch, even though it was a difficult surface to bat on. In the fourth set, Ravindra gave Tom Banton LBW after he hit a barrage of boundaries. There was some optimism for the Originals just before this, as Joe Root also fell for 4. However, Rehan (45*) used the bat to demonstrate his class.

Trusting himself with the slog-sweep and the back-and-across flat hit ball off the shorter deliveries, he slapped Josh Tongue for successive boundaries and was especially successful against the spin combination of Ravindra and Noor. Tom Moores, who scored a quick 22 off 13 to send the Originals to their fourth loss in six games, was a good companion for him.
