'Writing on the wall' – Robin Uthappa on Sanju Samson’s wish to leave RR

Former Indian cricket player Robin Uthappa has shared his thoughts on the potential causes behind Sanju Samson’s wish to leave the Indian Premier League’s Rajasthan Royals. Samson’s desire to split from RR has been mentioned in a number of reports.

According to Robin Uthappa, Samson would not have preferred to have opposing batting positions in India’s T20I lineup (starting slot) and at RR (being demoted to number four by Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Riyan Parag).

“They have Riyan Parag, who like to bat at number three, Suryavanshi, who has excelled, and Yashasvi, who has performed incredibly well for them. What does Sanju Samson do now? a position number four. If I were opening for India, would I want to bat at number four? Not at all. Robin Uthappa said in a video on his YouTube channel, “From his point of view, he probably thought that maybe that won’t change at RR, and they back their juniors, rather a bit, don’t they?

Robin Uthappa said Samson probably recognised that RR’s tendency to support new players would have made him realise that he wouldn’t be batting at the top of the order in the coming season.

“That has always been the RR culture. Perhaps he’s trying to go ahead of the curve by saying, “Let me move now,” so that he can go somewhere else, open the batting, and still compete for that spot at the top of the order on the Indian squad. He likely sees it as a writing on the wall. Thus, that’s possibly a little justification as well,” he continued.

Since 2018, Samson has been employed with RR. The 30-year-old has amassed 3278 runs at a remarkable 147.02, including two hundreds, in his eight seasons with the 2008 winners.
