Prithvi Shaw ruined Rohit Sharma’s cricket career by going in the wrong direction, according to Dinesh Lad, his childhood coach.
At the age of just 17, Prithvi Shaw scored a century on his Ranji Trophy debut during the 2016–17 season, making him a household celebrity. Prior to being selected for the senior national squad, he also guided India to the 2018 Under-19 World Cup championship. The Thane-born player hasn’t played for his country since 2021 after losing his berth shortly after smashing a century on his Test debut in 2018.
Prithvi Shaw has been going through a really tough time in his career because he was dropped halfway through the last Ranji Trophy because of bad form and disciplinary problems, forcing him to depart Mumbai before the upcoming domestic season. Shaw did participate in a few Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy games, but he was not included in the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad. After being released by the Delhi Capitals (DC), the 25-year-old also failed to sell in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) super auction.
Lad remembered how Prithvi Shaw rose to fame by captivating the cricket community with his incredible skill. He regretted, though, that the child had strayed from his course and had ruined his game.
“Prithvi Shaw and I have been together since he was ten years old.
He was a really good player. However, as I’ve stated, each person’s experience is unique, and I’m not sure what specifically transpired with him. Nevertheless, Prithvi Shaw was a gifted cricket player. “Unfortunately, he made a mistake and ended up ruining his cricket career,” Lad stated in an interview with Gaurav Mangalani.
Additionally, Lad called the newest batting sensations, such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, the future of Indian cricket and compared Shaw to them.
“I still believe that a batter like him should exist, batting the way he did. However, we have some genuinely exceptional hitters at the moment. For instance, the batting styles of Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. These are the cricket players of the future. They’re waiting in queue to get ready. He continued, “Indian cricket is nearly at the top.”
After moving to Maharashtra, Shaw will try to revive his career this season. In June, the right-handed batsman applied for and was granted a No Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association.
