But after the exciting 2-2 Test series draw, England batsman Harry Brook, who was awarded Player of the Series (POTS) along with Indian captain Shubman Gill, respectfully declined the honour from India head coach Gautam Gambhir. Even though he scored 481 runs, Brook believed that Joe Root, the former captain of England, deserved the award more because of his outstanding play in the five Test matches.
Almost every game in the five-match series between England and India was dramatic, with every Test match going right down to the wire. Following losses at Lord’s and Nottingham, India fell behind 1-2, but the visitors rallied with a draw in Manchester and a thrilling six-run victory at The Oval. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended in a 2-2 draw as a result.
Although Harry Brook was crucial to England’s campaign, he was particularly noteworthy in the fifth Test at The Oval, where his 111 in the fourth innings put the country within striking distance of a record chase. His 481 runs, which included two hundreds and a 99, came at an average of 53.44. In spite of these figures, Harry Brook openly declared that Root, who amassed 537 runs at an average of 67 and three hundreds, was the series’ highest scorer for England.

The home team remained in the series thanks to Root’s innings. He wore a unique headband to remember his late mentor Graham Thorpe after reaching his final century at The Oval, which was an emotional occasion. When the Indian side made a spectacular recovery, Root’s enormous 195-run stand with Brook in the fifth innings of the final Test nearly sealed the victory and the series for England. His departure on Day 4 set off a chain of events that saw India collect seven wickets for just 66 runs and win.

The selection of the Players of the Series, one from each team, has long been a tradition in England’s home Test series. It’s interesting to note that the head coach of the other team, not a commentary panel, independent panel, or the player’s coach, makes these choices.
Shubman Gill was selected as India’s standout player by England coach Brendon McCullum for the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Harry Brook was chosen by Gautam Gambhir, the coach of India, as England’s top performer.
