When Roston Chase got off during West Indies’ chase of 190 in the last match against Pakistan in Lauderhill on Sunday, he became the first hitter to retire out in a men’s Twenty20 International involving two Full Member sides.
Alick Athanaze had opened the innings with a 40-ball 60, giving the West Indies a strong start. However, they slowed down after he was removed, leaving the scoreboard at 110 for 3 at the conclusion of the 13th over. At the time, 80 runs from 42 balls were needed.
Chase, batting at number six, was retired out after failing to make any progress after walking out in the 12th over.
While No. 4 Sherfane Rutherford got off to a quick start, Chase found it difficult to get off the ground, hitting only two fours in a 12-ball 15 before being sent back to the dugout. After that, 41 runs had to be scored off 18 balls, and West Indies only managed 27 to lose the series 2-1.
In the 2024 T20 World Cup, Namibia’s opening batsman Nikolaas Davin resigned out after scoring 18 from 16 balls in a chase of 126 in ten overs against England at North Sound. This is the only other time a batter has retired out in a men’s T20I involving a Full Member country. The remaining 10 of these dismissals have all occurred during games between two Associate teams.
Coincidentally, Chase had already been retired from a T20 match at the ILT20 earlier this year. In the match against MI Emirates, his team, the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, batted first. He finished the 18th over with a score of 20 from 13.
