When asked if he would like to come out of retirement and play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) again, AB de Villiers had a crazy response. The former South African captain cheekily avoided being compared to 44-year-old MS Dhoni, who is still competing in the IPL.
AB de Villiers recently participated in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) competition, where he finished as the top run scorer after smashing three hundreds. He helped the South African champions win the championship by scoring a century against the Pakistani champions in the final.
Since 2021, AB de Villiers has not participated in the IPL. Regarding a possible return to the lucrative league for a further season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), AB de Villiers stated that he would be anxious because it would be a significant commitment. He mockingly said that when he was playing, he put forth a lot more effort than Dhoni.
“I’ll be overly anxious. I suppose I’d like to merely lend a hand. I’m an excellent supporter. The IPL is a three-month competition that is simply very lengthy. For a 41-year-old, it’s a significant commitment. Dhoni and I are not comparable. I put forth a lot more effort. Over the years, I worked much harder. I’m joking. I’ll give them my hat. However, we are all unique. It varies. On Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, de Villiers stated, “I’m happy because I gave it my best shot.”
RCB is adored by all: AB de Villiers
One of the most adored cricket players worldwide is De Villiers. His affiliation with RCB is largely responsible for the affection he receives. Seeing RCB supporters in the UK supporting him during WCL 2025 was fantastic, according to the former South African cricket player.
“RCB is adored by everyone. There were many RCB supporters at the Northampton County Cricket Club when I arrived. I heard the chants right away. That was awesome to hear again. It goes without saying that RCB is the current IPL champion, and I am thrilled to say that for the first time. Even in the UK, it’s wonderful to hear the choruses,” he remarked.
