Sunil Gavaskar honours Shubman Gill after stellar England tour

Test captain Shubman Gill received a cap and jersey from Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar in appreciation of his exceptional performance in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. In his first series as captain, Gill was in outstanding form at bat and came within 20 runs of surpassing Sunil Gavaskar record for the most runs scored by an Indian in a Test series.

Sunil Gavaskar, who is renowned for his considerate actions towards young players, created another unforgettable moment with this sincere remembrance. At Edgbaston, Gill’s batting prowess included a century in the second innings and a double century in the first, helping India win a historic match.

“Excellent work! In anticipation of you surpassing (the record of most runs by an Indian hitter in a Test series), I have a present for you. However, at least you have a goal for the upcoming series, right? This is merely a small present—a shirt bearing my initials, “SG.” I’m giving it to you, but someone made it for me.

After the play on Day 3, Sunil Gavaskar said Gill, “I’m not sure if it will fit you or not.”

I sign this small cap, which I only present to a select few people. God bless you, and that last move of putting a fielder there and bowling a yorker was amazing,” he continued.

With a remarkable 754 runs in 10 innings over five Test matches, including four hundreds and a high of 269, Gill concluded the series. Despite his outstanding performance, he came very close to surpassing Gavaskar’s record of 774 runs in eight innings during the 1970–71 tour of the West Indies, which stands as the most runs scored by an Indian in a Test series.

India was behind 2-1 going into the last Test match. To win the game and tie the series at two, they need to take nine wickets. In the meantime, 324 more runs are needed by the home team to complete a decisive 3-1 series win.
