Sanjay Manjrekar, a former Indian cricket player, acknowledged that Karun Nair’s failure to seize the second opportunity in international cricket was unfortunate. Playing at No. 6, Nair scored 0 and 20 in the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. After replacing Sai Sudharsan at number three, he was only able to score 31, 26, 40, and 14 in the following two Test matches.
In reference to Karun Nair well-known tweet from December 2022, “Give me one more chance,” Manjrekar pointed out that the batter was given opportunities during the England tour but was unable to take advantage of them. This led to Sudharsan being called up to the playing XI once more and the top-order batsman being benched before of the fourth Test match at Old Trafford, Manchester.
He said, “Cricket, give me another chance,” in an emotive narrative. Cricket gave him another chance. Regretfully, he failed to capture it. We also have Sai Sudarshan returning, you know. That was the narrative, then. “I think Sai Sudarshan should have played the second test as well, so it’s good to see him back,” Manjrekar said during the fourth Test on television.
Karun Nair hasn’t scored many significant runs, unfortunately: Gill Shubman
Although there is nothing wrong with Nair’s batting in the series, the cricketer-turned-commentator noted that the game did not click for him. At the pre-match press conference, Indian captain Shubman Gill justified Nair’s subpar performances, giving the impression that the 33-year-old will be kept in the starting lineup.
Karun Nair is hitting nicely, in our opinion. He batted at number six in the first game, but he didn’t actually play at his number. Making a return as a player in a series like this is challenging. However, I don’t believe his hitting has been problematic. Getting that click might also be important at times. You can return to your zone and have some tremendous runs after you reach your 50. “Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened for him yet,” Gill had stated during the news conference prior to the game.
Karnataka hails the return of Karun Nair
After a three-year break, the Jodhpur native is expected to make a comeback to his native Karnataka for the upcoming domestic season. With 863 runs at an average of 53, he played a key role in Vidarbha’s winning streak during the Ranji Trophy 2024–25 season. The Vidarbha Cricket Association has now given him a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) to play for Karnataka in the forthcoming season.
