An official from the BCB stated that the controversy surrounding Najmul Hossain Shanto‘s dismissal as ODI captain was unfounded because, at the time, Bangladesh had no ODI captain because his term had finished with the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Just before the Sri Lankan tour, BCB cricket operations chairman Nazmul Abedin faced harsh criticism for selecting Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the ODI skipper instead of Najmul Hossain, who had been given an extension. After the abrupt change in captaincy, Miraz went on to say that there would be no issues in the dressing room.
Though Nazmul begs to differ, many cricketers believe that Najmul Hossain resigned as Test captain after feeling offended by the outcome because he had been hoping to head the ODI team. Nazmul finally spoke up about the issue on Saturday Night, a talk show that aired on Jamuna TV on July 19.
“After the Champions Trophy, we had no ODI captain. The claim that Najmul Hossain lost his captaincy is untrue. The broadcast quoted Nazmul as saying, “There was actually no captain.” Given that he was the former captain, Shanto might have thought he would be in the lead in the upcoming series. It’s quite acceptable to think that. However, the board might have had different ideas. The board could have reappointed Shanto, he clarified, but that would have needed a different statement.
Discussions with Shanto were out of the question because we lacked a captain at the moment. Since Shanto was the former captain, he was informed of the decision that was made in a meeting. It’s not true that he was stripped of his captaincy, but there could have been a conversation with him,” Nazmul explained.
“It was my duty to notify Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shanto that the captaincy choice was made during a meeting. No additional terms or conditions applied. I told Shanto first for that reason,” he continued.
