‘Batting looks threatening, but bowling is vulnerable’ – Andrew Strauss on England’s Ashes preparedness

"I don't think Ben needs to worry about where he sits in the pantheon of England cricketers - he’s already done so many extraordinary things as a player and a captain," he said.

'Batting looks threatening, but bowling is vulnerable' – Andrew Strauss on England’s Ashes preparedness

Former England captain Andrew Strauss said the Ben Stokes-led team wants to beat Australia, but the bowling attack needs to improve before the next Ashes tour. Strauss, who guided England to their last Ashes win in Australia in 2010–11, highlighted that England has not won a Test in 15 attempts Down Under.

Andrew Strauss contemplated England’s issues during the third Test against India at Lord’s, which was turned ‘Red for Ruth’ to benefit the Ruth Strauss Foundation. He said Ben Stokes has a solid batting unit, but the bowling line-up is unknown for high-pressure series like the Ashes.

I don’t think Ben needs to worry about where he ranks in England cricket’s pantheon—he’s done so much as a player and captain.

Andrew Strauss told Mirror that winning in Australia requires momentum, confidence, and a stable team.

“These Tests against India will determine the mood in the camp heading to Australia, but the bowling has been exposed on flat tracks in good weather so far this season. He’ll be wondering how we can take 20 wickets. The batting is risky. They take the bull by the horns and have many dangerous hitters, but bowling is a concern, the former cricketer said.

What is ‘Red for Ruth’?

Lord’s held its seventh ‘Red for Ruth’ event in remembrance of Ruth Strauss, who died of non-smoking lung cancer in 2018. England players played with crimson numbers and letters to celebrate her legacy.

The Ruth Strauss Foundation has raised over £4 million to help over 5,000 terminal cancer families since its founding. Over 1,300 healthcare workers have received specific training from the charity.

“It’s always humbling to see Lord’s resplendent in red, it’s an incredible showcase and we never take it for granted,” Strauss added.
