Just as Lord’s is cricket’s home, Wimbledon is tennis’s mecca: Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar attended Wimbledon 2025 during the third Test between India and England at Lord’s. At the All England Club, Tendulkar watched the men’s singles semifinal between defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and American Taylor Fritz from the Royal Box. With his wife Anjali and daughter Sara, the former cricketer wore a suit, tie, and sunglasses. He took pictures with Roger Federer and Björn Borg.

As a Grand Slam regular, Sachin Tendulkar has loved Wimbledon. The renowned cricketer discussed his affection for the competition and its impact on his life and career.

It’s incredible. This is tennis’ Mecca, like Lord’s is cricket’s. From the age of seven or eight, when I started following and understanding tennis, Wimbledon came first, then the Grand Slams. I consider this the best. All tennis players I’ve spoken to rank this tournament highly.

The Royal Box has the best atmosphere. Sitting here is the finest way to watch the action. Beyond the matches, you meet many individuals and have many talks. Fashion icons, Hollywood stars, footballers, and athletes exist. Being here is always a treat since you learn so much. For me, learning never stops. “I’m learning,” he told Wimbledon’s social media crew.

Champion mindset: never-give-up

While most of his buddies supported Björn Borg, the 52-year-old grew up admiring John McEnroe and even wore a headband to be called McEnroe. In recent years, he has favoured Roger Federer and acknowledged Carlos Alcaraz’s ability.

I admired John McEnroe as a kid. All my buddies favoured Björn Borg, but I always supported McEnroe. I even wore a headband like him to be called McEnroe when walking with my pals. Roger Federer in recent years. I like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger, but Roger wins. Carlos Alcaraz’s energy is contagious among contemporary players. I like his attitude, legs, and mental tenacity at the French Open. Champion mindset is never-give-up. I respect the preparation and dedication of tennis players who don’t win, Sachin Tendulkar said.

Yuvraj Singh is Sachin Tendulkar’s doubles partner.

Sachin Tendulkar noted that tennis and cricket share many parallels and that some features are crucial.

Similarities include hand-eye coordination, ball feel, game awareness, and staying ahead of the competition. Footwork is key. Both cricket and tennis require coordinated footwork, especially when batting. People assume running between the wickets is a sprint, but it’s about stopping, turning, and accelerating swiftly. Tennis players also strive to disorient each other. Movement across the court must be quick and smooth. You can play your shots and attack best then. I perceive these similarities.”

Sachin Tendulkar chose Yuvraj Singh as his doubles partner. “I’ve played doubles with Yuvraj Singh. Against certain 2003 World Cup colleagues, we won. I’d choose Yuvraj again,” he continued.

He chose Federer for his playing XI as a tennis player. “It has to be Roger Federer because of cricket and his South African mother. Other than Roger, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna, and Sania Mirza have excelled here. Indians love cricket, and these players have done amazing things for Indian tennis. Tendulkar decided that they will always be strong rivals.

Tendulkar’s image was revealed at Lord’s MCC Museum a day before the semifinal. The portrait by Stuart Pearson Wright joins the Long Room’s legends. Tendulkar also rang the Lord’s bell to commence Day 1 of the third Test between India and England.
