Jason Roy has returned to form for Surrey and gained a contract in The Hundred to replace injured Faf du Plessis at Southern Brave. du Plessis, who signed a £78,500 direct agreement, withdrew to undergo groin surgery after an IPL injury.
Jason Roy, who helped Oval Invincibles win the 2023 title, has had a mixed Hundred career.
He has averaged 19.55 with 132.09 strike rate in three seasons. After going undrafted, Andrew Flintoff’s Northern Superchargers saved him last year, but a shoulder ailment kept him out.
Despite setting a £63,000 reserve price, the 33-year-old was undrafted again this year. Jason Roy is back in form in the T20 Blast for Surrey. He started the season with three half-centuries in five innings. His 301 runs at 141.98 have earned him a spot in The Hundred despite his recent decline.
Before the March draft, Du Plessis was a headline signing for Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket (MLC). He chose The Hundred window for his groin operation. Delhi Capitals, co-owned by Southern Brave owners GMR Group, features Du Plessis.
Jason Roy contract was confirmed before Tuesday’s wildcard draft, where each side will pick two male and female players based on their T20 Blast results. James Anderson, who has never played in The Hundred, has taken 13 wickets in six matches for Lancashire in his return to T20 cricket after 11 years.
Southern Brave are also monitoring Finn Allen, who injured his foot during the MLC and will miss New Zealand’s T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe. Allen, who made 240 runs in nine innings for Southern Brave in 2023, was signed for £52,000 earlier this year after missing last season with a toe injury.
James Vince will captain the Southern Brave, who finished second last season. Adi Birrell replaces Stephen Fleming as head coach in 2025.
Left-arm wrist spinner Millie Taylor has joined Birmingham Phoenix to replace Charis Paveley, who has withdrawn due to a foot injury. Taylor will debut in The Hundred after taking 15 wickets in the T20 Blast this season. Her twin sister Mary plays for Hampshire and Southern Brave.
