Mark Ramprakash backs Shubman Gill for 'Fab Four' spot

Mark Ramprakash, a former English cricket player, said Shubman Gill had all the qualities needed to be included in the “Fab Four” as a batter. Following his 430-run total in the just finished second Test match between India and England at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Ramprakash was in awe of Shubman Gill batsmanship.

After the departure of star batsman Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Ramprakash was also impressed with how the No. 4 batsman adapted to his new role as captain of a rather inexperienced team.

“As the new captain of a young team, we have to demonstrate his endurance, skill, and hunger—not just for runs, but also to lead by example. The search for players who can step in has been ongoing as we approach the end of a time that has been dominated by the so-called Fab Four: Steve Smith, Joe Root, Kane Williamson, and Virat Kohli. In a piece for The Guardian, Ramprakash said, “Gill has proven he can fill those boots and in a wonderfully orthodox style: he plays all formats and is brilliantly adaptable, but with a foundation of classic technique.”

Since the Indian squad easily defeated the Ben Stokes-led team by 336 runs, the former cricket player also said that the extra responsibility of captaincy did not negatively affect the 25-year-old’s batting performances.

Although being captain can have a negative impact on a player’s form, he appears to have been more concentrated as evidenced by the three Test scores he has achieved in the last three weeks. After just two games in the series, Shubman Gill has already shown us something truly remarkable. He delivered an extremely rare individual effort that defines and controls a game during the second Test at Edgbaston, he continued.

Shubman Gill lack of regret paved the way for England’s downfall: Ramprakash

Shubman Gill full exhaustion on the pitch was the reason given by the former English top-order batsman for England’s top-order collapse in their opening innings. Following Gill’s outstanding double hundred, India’s first innings finished on the second day. England’s first innings, in which they were three down early in the innings, lasted less than a session.

“Batters’ mental clarity and decision-making, including what to play and when to leave, as well as their movement and footwork, are affected by that fatigue.” The match was largely decided when England was reduced to 25 for three at the close of the second day. In addition to India’s use of the new ball, Ramprakash pointed out that Gill’s lack of regret was what made it possible.

Lord’s will host the third Test match of the England vs. India series. After winning the last game by a commanding 336 runs, Shubman Gill & Co. will be looking to build on the momentum and possibly grab the lead at the end of the match.
