Pant should be rated among top Test batters, not just Gilchrist – R Ashwin

According to former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, Rishabh Pant has outlived his rookie status and needs to establish a standard that reflects his abilities. In his 45 Test matches thus far, the southpaw has amassed 3290 runs at an average of 44.45 and a strike rate of 74.40 in 79 innings.

With 342 runs in four innings, the southpaw has also been playing brilliantly in the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Additionally, Ashwin made a remark regarding Pant’s defensive prowess, saying that it is far superior to Adam Gilchrist’s.

According to the former spinner, Pant shouldn’t be categorised with Gilchrist.

“I hope Rishabh reaches his full potential. He can amuse us, yet he can also exercise restraint when necessary. Rishabh is no longer a novice. On his YouTube account, Ashwin posted, “I want to hold Pant to his standards.

“He is an amazing musician. Many people compare him to Adam Gilchrist, yet he is not Gilchrist. His defence wasn’t very strong. Pant’s defence is excellent. Instead of Gilchrist, he should be compared to some of the best batters. “Pant things can be done by Rishabh Rishabh,” Ashwin continued.

In the first match of the series at Headingley, Rishabh scored two hundreds (134 and 118), but India lost by five wickets. With just 25 runs in the first innings of the second Test at Edgbason, he did not have a long career. However, a turnaround occurred in the second innings as Rishabh 65 off 58 balls provided the innings the boost it required.

Regarding the forthcoming Test at Lord’s, the third in the current five-match series, where India has an opportunity to grab the lead, there will be high expectations for Pant. On July 10, the third match will start.
