Since being named India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill has improved his red-ball performance. In the present Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, his first task as India’s red-ball captain, he has scored 585 runs from four innings at an incredible average of 146.25.
Prior to the tour, Shubman’s Test average was little over 35. His Test average has risen to 42.72 after two Test matches into the England tour, and he has amassed three hundreds, including his first double century in the Edgbaston Test’s opening innings. He became the first batter in Test history to score a double century and a 150 in the same game during this meeting.
Having watched Shubman’s development up close and acting as a sort of elder brother and mentor, Yuvraj Singh was unable to decide between his batting and captaincy on the England tour.
The former all-rounder for India said Shubman led the Asian powerhouses from the front and was the team’s finest player.
“His batting and leadership are both outstanding, in my opinion. He’s really stepped up to the plate. Being the captain of the Test team is a difficult job, and his performance is exactly what it takes to be a test captain. Through his leadership, he has demonstrated that he is the team’s top performer,” Yuvraj told India Today.
Yuvraj also commended India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar for believing in Shubman and entrusting him with the esteemed duty of captaining the squad in the game’s longest format.
“I’m confident that Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir should also be given credit for assembling this team and giving him the duty. And I hope India wins this Test series going forward,” he continued.
India recovered with a 336-run victory at Edgbaston after England won the first Test by five wickets at Headingley. On Thursday, July 10, the third Test will get underway at London’s storied Lord’s Cricket Ground.
