Harry Brook returns to No.1; career-best Test ranks for Gill, Mulder

Harry Brook overtook Joe Root as the top batter in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings in the latest weekly update, while India skipper Shubman Gill and South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder set career bests.

Harry Brook 158 in the first innings of the second Test against India in Birmingham gave him 886 rating points, 18 more than Root, breaking the previous captain’s six-month reign at the top.

Last December, Harry Brook was No. 1 for a week.

Gill became only the second player in history to score above 150 in both innings in a Test match and the second best Test aggregate ever with 430 runs in the Edgbaston Test. He rose 15 positions to a career-best sixth with 269 and 161 runs. Gill started this series 23rd and held his previous best of 14th in September last year.

After the second Test of the five-match ICC World Test Championship (WTC) series, Ravindra Jadeja rose six places to 39th and Jamie Smith rose 16 places to enter the top 10 for the first time after his solid innings of 184 not out and 88.

India’s new-ball bowlers Mohammad Siraj and Akash Deep, who each had five wickets, have risen in the rankings. Siraj rose six places to 22nd with seven wickets, while Akash Deep rose 39 places to a career-best 45th with a maiden 10-wicket haul.

Mulder on all three Test lists

Mulder’s massive 367 not out in the Bulawayo Test, the greatest score by a South African batsman, earned him a big ranking boost, moving him up 34 spots to a career-best 22nd place.

In terms of rankings, his three wickets in the game have also paid off, as he has risen four spots to 48th among bowlers and, more importantly, to a career-best third among all-rounders, now just behind Jadeja and Mehidy Hasan Miraz of Bangladesh.

Mulder began the series ranked 73rd among hitters, 58th among bowlers, and 22nd among all-rounders. He concluded the two Test matches with 531 runs and seven wickets.

Other players who improved from their performances at Bulawayo include bowlers Corbin Bosch (up six spots to 51st) and batsmen David Bedingham (up four spots to 43rd) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (up eight spots to 60th).

Due to their performances in the second Test match between the West Indies and Australia in Grenada, Cameron Green (up four spots to 45th) and Beau Webster (up two spots to 50th) have moved up the visiting team’s batting rankings, while the West Indian batters who have advanced are Roston Chase (up four spots to 81st) and Brandon King (up 60 places to 83rd).

Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, both from the West Indies, have moved up six spots to rank 29th and 31st among bowlers, respectively.

Hasaranga and Kusal Mendis rank in the top 10 of the ODI Rankings.

Sri Lanka’s two centurions have improved in the most recent edition of the Men’s ODI Player Rankings following their 2-1 series victory over Bangladesh. Kusal Mendis’ 124 in the last match put him into the top 10 for the first time, while Charith Asalanka’s 106 in the opening match moved him up two spots to sixth place.

Other players to rise in the batting rankings are Janith Liyanage of Sri Lanka (up seven spots to 44th) and Towhid Hridoy of Bangladesh (up seven spots to 51st). Meanwhile, spinner Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka has returned to the top 10 of the bowling rankings, moving up 11 spots to eighth place.
