Don’t criticise Gambhir, he’s doing well’ – Yograj Singh backs India coach after Edgbaston win

We shouldn't demoralise our team if they lose the series. If you lose, you won't explain; if you win, you don't "Said Yograj.

Don't criticise Gambhir, he's doing well' – Yograj Singh backs India coach after Edgbaston win

Former cricketer Yograj Singh has defended India head coach Gautam Gambhir, saying he is doing a good job. Gambhir led India to a 336-run win against England in the second Test at Edgbaston, their first Test win at the renowned stadium in all their games.

Before this win, Shubman Gill’s team had struggled in red-ball cricket, and Gambhir was under fire. However, Yograj believes the recent triumph silences doubters and hopes India goes home with a series win.

“Indian athletes are constantly developing. We’ll always back them. Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Rahul Dravid are giving back to cricket because they’ve got so much, Yograj told NDTV Sports.

We shouldn’t demoralise our team if they lose the series. And if you win, you don’t have to explain. He continued, “We hope Shubman Gill captains us to victory.”

Gautam Gambhir is doing great, so don’t talk about him.

Gambhir was overlooked after the Indian national team’s disappointing run of play in the longest format, especially after their five-wicket loss to England in the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) opener at Headingley, Leeds. The 43-year-old has won the Champions Trophy in white-ball cricket, but his red-ball aggression was questioned.

India had lost seven of their previous nine Test matches, including a 0–3 home whitewash against New Zealand, a 3–1 series loss in Australia, and the Leeds loss. They also displayed flashes of brilliance, overpowering Australia with a 265-run triumph in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and escape defeat in Brisbane with weather interruptions.

After a historic win at Edgbaston, India will look to continue their winning streak in the third Test at Lord’s on Thursday, July 10.
