Cricket veteran Brian Lara recently said that young batsmen Harry Brook and Yashasvi Jaiswal would eclipse his legendary 400-run Test-match record, according to former England captain Michael Atherton. More than twenty years have passed since Lara’s historic accomplishment.
The fifth-highest individual score in Test history was recently achieved by South Africa’s stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder, who hit an undefeated 367 against Zimbabwe in the second Test. Mulder made the decision to declare the innings even though he had the opportunity to break Lara’s record, which has caused conflicting opinions among cricket fans. Lara’s two top scores, Matthew Hayden and Mahela Jayawardene, are currently ahead of Mulder’s undefeated 367.
On the eve of Brian Lara’s 375th innings, his first record-breaking innings, I asked him if he thought anyone would break it.
He claimed that given the speed at which modern players score, someone will undoubtedly break it. Who is most likely to do it, I asked? He thought that Harry Brook and Yashasvi Jaiswal would try their hand at it,” Atherton stated on the Sky Sports Podcast.
Early in his international career, the young Indian batsman has already recorded a few double hundreds. In a same vein, Brook’s spectacular 317 in the first Test match against Pakistan in 2024 attracted headlines.
Former cricket player and analyst Dinesh Karthik highlighted the changing image of the South African all-rounder by recalling how Mulder was first perceived as a temporary No. 3 during the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia at Lord’s.
“First of all, he had the option since he was the captain. He felt he needed time to bowl them out, so he decided not to. Many of the whispers in the communication box during that WTC Final were, “Oh, Wiaan Mulder at No. 3? It must only be appropriate for this particular match. Despite having a difficult start in the first innings, he came out and played a very valuable knock and fought extremely well, making an impact even if his stats weren’t particularly high. Did I anticipate his receiving 367, though? Karthik stated on the Sky Sports Podcast, “I don’t think so.”
