Mark Butcher mocks umpires after Ben Stokes’ late review – ‘Not sure that means anything’

Mark Butcher mocks umpires after Ben Stokes' late review – 'Not sure that means anything'

On Day 4 of the second Test match against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham, England captain Ben Stokes chose to have a review with one second remaining on the clock. Former England cricketers Michael Atherton and Mark Butcher then made a sarcastic jab at the on-field umpires.

A contentious event on Day 3, when Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was permitted to contest an umpire’s call even after the DRS timer appeared to have expired, was duplicated in this occurrence. Stokes was upset by the judgement because the third umpire was allowed to continue the review because the on-field umpires did not raise an objection.

“Ran down the clock, and he was just okay to call for the review, just in time,” Atherton stated before the game.

“I’m not sure that means anything, do you?” Butcher answered.

“Do you reckon he had another couple of seconds left?” Atherton laughed and gave in.

Ben Stokes’ intuition was right, though, as England lost the review and the Ultra Edge verified a slight inside edge.

On a tense Day 4 at Edgbaston, India maintained their lead, which grew to over 350 runs, despite their desire for swift breakthroughs.

Gill (24*) and Rishabh Pant (41*) were undefeated at the crease as India was 177 for 3 at lunchtime on Day 4. Jaiswal lost his wicket in the latter part of Day 3 after batting 28, while KL Rahul (55) and Karun Nair (26) were the two wickets to go in the early session.
