Jadeja arrives early at Edgbaston for additional batting practice

According to Ravindra Jadeja, he got to Edgbaston early on Day 2 in order to get in some additional batting before the game started. India scored 310 for 5 overnight on a pitch that was still suitable for batting, but the first session required careful manoeuvring because the second new ball was only five overs old.

This is exactly what Ravindra Jadeja and captain Shubman Gill accomplished, increasing their partnership from 99 to 203.

“Somewhere I felt that I should go and bat extra because the ball was still new,” Jadeja remarked after stumps, after missing a fifth Test century by only eleven runs. “I thought the remainder of the innings would be simple if I could get the new ball off. Fortunately, I was able to bat until lunchtime, and Washi[ngton Sundar] did well with Shubman as well. You never feel like you’re set in England, so the more you bat there, the better. A ball could swing at any moment and bowl you or take your edge.

The BCCI’s SOPs, which require players to travel with the squad, may seem to be in conflict with Jadeja’s admission that he travelled alone to the ground. However, the head coach and the chairman of the selectors must first approve such exceptions. “It is anticipated that every player will accompany the squad to and from practices and games. It is discouraged to travel separately with families in order to preserve team cohesiveness and discipline. According to the SOP, any exceptions must be preapproved by the chairman of the selection committee and the head coach.

After being stranded with the lower order during India’s twin failures at Headingley, Jadeja was able to demonstrate his own batting prowess and bat alongside Gill, a well-set batsman, as India amassed a massive 587. “When you contribute with the bat for the team, it feels great, when you are playing outside India, and the team needs you more, it feels good,” Jadeja stated.

“It is difficult to form a significant alliance to advance the squad after 210 for 5. It was a challenge to me. As a batter and cricket player, it gives you confidence that you can contribute in the upcoming games if you can stay with the skipper and form a strong partnership. We only discussed partnership while we were batting together. that we will continue to communicate with one another and to bat long. That was the subject of our chat.

There were some flashpoints in that stand. England captain Ben Stokes became enraged with Jadeja and protested to the referees about him running into the danger area following front-foot strokes.

Jadeja put it thus way: “He felt I was making rough for myself,” “Anyway, the quick bowlers were doing it. That’s not necessary for me to do. He kept saying, “I’m running on the wicket,” to the umpire. That was not my aim. I didn’t mean to, but it might have happened once or twice by accident.

In order to force a result, India’s bowling group—which includes two spinners—will require assistance from the pitch. There hasn’t been any turn or inconsistent bounce thus far.

“The wicket seems good to me. For batters, it’s beneficial. You need to keep it tight because there isn’t much action off the wicket. Additionally, as there are many opportunities for the balls to go to the boundary, you will need in-out fields. However, Day 3 will be tomorrow. Therefore, I believe that the wicket may change from how it played the previous two days. A slight [uneven] bounce up and down could occur.
