Carey, Webster lift Australia to 286

On the opening day of the second Test, Australia was bowled out for 286 against the West Indies. Roston Chase lost the toss on an unevenly bounced surface, but the home team got ahead early and dominated the rest of the day, save for a costly afternoon session in which Beau Webster and Alex Carey pulled together a century partnership to propel Australia to a respectable total. The openers for the West Indies came out to start their reply, but play was suspended before a ball was bowled in the second innings due to poor lighting.

Australia got off to a strong start with openers Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja scoring 47 runs between them, but the visitors soon lost wickets before lunch. Alzarri Joseph trapped Khawaja for 16 lbw, making Khawaja the first to leave. Konstas edged Anderson Phillip to the keeper in the following over and was out for 25. Steve Smith was out for three shortly after, attempting to draw Joseph but receiving a top edge to the long leg. Australia was at 93 for 4 after Cameron Green appeared stable for a while but was caught at gully off Jayden Seales for 26 shortly before lunch.

Australia was struggling at 110 for 5, but a pivotal 112-run partnership between Beau Webster and Alex Carey saved the day.

The third umpire confirmed the low catch by Shai Hope after Travis Head added a few fast runs after the interval but was caught behind off Shamar Joseph for 29. Before mistiming a pull shot from Justin Greaves and giving Kraigg Brathwaite a straightforward catch at mid-wicket, Carey achieved a fluid 63 off 81 balls despite being dropped once by Shai Hope. Webster was run out when attempting to take a second run to defend the tail, but he remained strong and scored 60 off 115 balls.

Not much could be added by the remaining lower order. Mitchell Starc edged Seales to the keeper for six, and Alzarri bowled a ball that stayed low to Pat Cummins. Alzarri took his fourth wicket when Nathan Lyon gloved a short ball to Shai Hope after attempting to hook it.
