On Wednesday, July 2, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, 14, put on another outstanding display for India U19 versus England U19 in the third Youth ODI. The teenage southpaw reached his half-century in just 20 balls after blasting 86 runs off just 31 balls.
With captain Thomas Rew scoring an undefeated 76 off 44 balls, England posted a formidable total of 268 for 6 in the match, which was cut short to 40 overs due to rain delays. But thanks to Suryavanshi’s brilliant performance, India’s chase was thrilling.
Suryavanshi hit 86, the best total in his six youth ODIs for India, with nine sixes and six fours. In 34.3 overs, India easily chased down the target. After Rishabh Pant’s 18-ball half-century against Nepal U19 in 2016, his 20-ball fifty is the second-fastest by an Indian in youth ODIs.
Suryavanshi’s nine sixes, which were previously shared by Raj Angad Bawa and Mandeep Singh, created a new Indian record for the most sixes in a youth ODI innings. Ninety-six percent of the 78 runs scored by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener came from boundaries. Manan Vohra, Sarfaraz Khan, and Pant are the only three previous Indian youth ODI players who have scored more runs in boundaries in an innings.
With an incredible strike rate of 213.09 and 179 runs in three innings, Suryavanshi is currently leading the batting statistics in the five-match series.
The fourth game in the five-match ODI series, which India leads 2-1, is set for July 5 in Worcester.
