Sanjay Bangar, a former Indian cricket player, has underlined that India needs to use a specialised fielder at the gully position because it is a vital spot with lots of opportunities for catches. The remark follows India’s numerous wasted opportunities in the slip cordon during the Headingley series opener, for which Yashasvi Jaiswal has come under fire.
Few players have continuously performed well at the gully position over the years, Sanjay Bangar noted.
He remembered that the only two safe choices in his memory were Anil Kumble, who did well there at first, and Ajinkya Rahane, who eventually took over the role with quick reflexes.
It’s critical to avoid dropping receptions. It makes the bowling department’s job even more difficult. However, I would argue that this is also a new development for India. Additionally, wherever Yashasvi actually plays, gully is a position in cricket that is extremely specialised. Sanjay Bangar stated on the “Follow the Blues” broadcast that “I believe India will need to invest in a specific player to master the catching part in the gully area.”
“Because I can’t think of many outstanding players who were regularly found in the gully area. In my recollection, Anil Kumble performed admirably for India during his playing career. Ajinkya Rahane took control of that position. Real attention must then be paid to become a skilled gully fielder. Because many catches end up there,” he continued.
The former cricket player who is now a commentator went on to say that the team’s top fielder should occupy the gully position. He emphasised that the ideal candidate for the role would be an experienced slip catcher who has continuously performed that function for a considerable amount of time.
Additionally, your finest fielder should be assigned to this position. The point fielder must be your best fielder, as we say. In reality, though, your finest catcher needs to be a little bit broader in the slip cordon—perhaps in the gully or perhaps the four-slip areas. And many of those captures end up there. It’s also past time for India to consider sending a specialist there. And perhaps someone who has played the function of slip catcher for a very long time will have to assume that obligation,” Sanjay Bangar said.
