In the second Test of the current five-match series against England, India’s captain, Shubman Gill, made a suggestion that his team would field two spinners. This indicates that Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist spin would be used in the Edgbaston match.
After thinking back on the opening match of the series, he believed that if Ravindra Jadeja had bowled with another spinner, the outcome may have been very different. Shubman Gill also noted that it would have been easier to control the run flow if there had been another spinner.
“The game could have been better in the last game if we had had an extra spinner in the fourth innings. The wicket had a few spots that could have been taken advantage of. Opportunities were generated whenever Jaddu [Ravindra Jadeja] bhai was bowling. Additionally, we believe that spinners are better at containing runs than quick bowlers, particularly as the ball ages.
It gets really tough if you don’t take wickets,” Shubman Gill said.
He also discussed how many batters a team should have in order to enhance their hitting depth.
“Until No. 7 and if your No. 8 can bat a little bit, I suppose you would want batting depth. It is challenging to collect 20 wickets if you are going to No. 9. It would be a wonderful mix if we could use four or five top bowlers and bat till No. 7 or 8, he continued.
In the opening match of the series, which India lost by five wickets, Jadeja did not have the best of days with the ball. After bowling more than 20 overs in each innings, he only managed one wicket in both innings for the second time in his Test career.
The two would try to apply pressure on the English hitters from both ends and support the fast bowlers’ efforts if Kuldeep were to accompany him. Going into the second Test, the Gill-led team will be under more pressure to tie the series.
