Due to his criticism of third umpire Adrian Holdstock during the first Test match against Australia in Barbados, West Indies coach Daren Sammy has been fined.
On the second day, Sammy was particularly upset by two rulings that went against West Indies: Shai Hope’s inside edge, which was excellently taken by Alex Carey, who was declared to have held the catch cleanly, and Roston Chase’s lbw, which was upheld by Holdstock despite a possibility of an inside edge. Holdstock declared a low catch to Hope off Travis Head not carried on the first day.
Sammy expressed his worries with Holdstock’s umpiring during the last ODI series in England following the play on the second day.
“You don’t want to get yourself in a situation where you’re wondering about certain umpires,” he stated. “Is there a problem with this team? However, it begs the question when you witness decision after decision.
In regards to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match or any player, player support personnel, match official, or team participating in any international match,” Sammy was found to have violated Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
For the level one infraction, he was penalised 15% of his match money. Additionally, Sammy’s disciplinary record now has one demerit point applied for his first offence in a 24-month period.
Sammy acknowledged the violation and agreed to the punishment that match referee Javagal Srinath suggested. Level 1 violations are punishable by one or two demerit points, a minimum of an official reprimand, and a maximum of a 50% match fee fine.
Although there has been no discussion of a sanction against him, Captain Chase was equally scathing of the decisions in his post-match remarks.
Nitin Menon and Richard Kettleborough will share the TV job, and Holdstock will officiate the following two Test matches in Grenada and Jamaica.
