Najmul Hossain relinquishes Bangladesh Test captaincy

Bangladesh Test skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto has resigned. Najmul was not expected to stay as Test captain, according to a previous report from Cricbuzz. Following Bangladesh’s loss to Sri Lanka in Colombo on Saturday by an innings and 78 runs, Najmul Hossain made his announcement.

He stated, “I have an announcement to make,” during the news conference held after the game. “I’m leaving my position as Bangladesh’s Test captain. I want to make it very clear to everyone that this is not a personal issue and that I do not want to continue as captain in this format. I think this will benefit the team, and it is solely for their benefit.”

Najmul Hossain went on to say that he chose to resign because he didn’t think Bangladesh required three captains in three formats.

While Najmul Hossain resigned as T20I captain, Bangladesh recently gave Mehidy Hasan the ODI captaincy.

“I’ve had the chance to be in this dressing room over the past few years, and I don’t think having three captains for three forms makes sense. This is entirely my own personal view. I completely accept the cricket board’s decision to hold a different opinion. I think it will be challenging for the squad to have three captains. Therefore, I am resigning for the benefit of the team,” he said.

“It is up to the cricket board to decide whether to stick with three leaders in three forms. I just hope that people don’t take this personally or assume that I did this because I was upset about being passed over for the ODI captaincy. I would like to reiterate that this is for the team’s benefit. “This isn’t personal,” he continued.

“I already informed the cricket operations department a few days back,” he stated.
