Pant is revolutionising the game – Greg Chappell

Despite India's defeat in the Headingley Test, Pant's genius was evident as he struck hundreds in both innings.

Rishabh Pant deserves to be measured alongside players like Virat Kohli: R Ashwin

Greg Chappell thinks Rishabh Pant‘s unconventional batting style is revolutionising cricket and changing the game. The former India coach exclaimed, “…and he’s a match-winner,” adding that he “very nearly made the difference in that game (at Headingley).”

Despite India’s defeat in the Headingley Test, Pant’s genius was evident as he struck hundreds in both innings, a unique accomplishment that demonstrated his capacity to alter the course of games.

“The great thing about Pant’s batting is that he scores runs quickly, giving you plenty of time to win cricket matches. His performance was outstanding; when I last looked at the MCC coaching manual, I doubted that some of the shots he made were included. Chappell lavished admiration on the Indian wicketkeeper, saying, “As a batsman, he is reinventing the game.”

Pant became the second wicketkeeper-batter to hit a century in each innings of a Test match, after Andy Flower.

“You know, the bats are really different in the modern world. It goes without saying that you can play shots that the old bats couldn’t. He’s thrilling to watch, though, man. At any point, you can never be certain of what to anticipate from the first ball. He will probably play the falling ramp shot or leap down the wicket to the quick bowlers. “It keeps the opposition on their toes because you never know what to expect,” Chappell stated during a promotional event in Mumbai on Wednesday, June 25.

Chappell, who is widely considered to be among the best Australian batters after Don Bradman, compared Pant to another legendary wicketkeeper, Adam Gilchrist.

“What an exciting cricketer, what a player to have on your team,” he commented. He was obviously a different kind of player when I first saw him, but he reminded me a lot of Adam Gilchrist. You are aware of the impact having a wicketkeeper who can bat at that level and score runs fast can have on a team.

Gill is off to a good start as captain.

As a captain, Chappell thought Shubman Gill had a strong Test and would only improve. The Test match was fantastic. Although India didn’t end up on the right side, they accomplished a lot of positive things. Shubman Gill’s tenure as a Test match captain got off to a fantastic start. Conditions were likely better for him on the last day than they were at any other point during the Test match, even though as a player the outcome might not have gone as planned.

Thus, he will have gained a lot of knowledge from that. The events of the Test match will have taught the Indian think tank a lot. As captain, he will only continue to improve. The outcome might have been drastically different if the side had made a few more catches and perhaps if the tail had waggled a little more in both innings. However, I believe there are still four Test matches left. I believe he got off to a great start as captain, but we’ll have to wait and see.
