Early on Day 1 of the first Test, bowler Shamar Joseph gave the hosts of the West Indies’ World Test Championship (WTC 2025–27) a great start at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown with an outstanding opening spell against Australia. Joseph gave the hosts vital breakthroughs by dismissing Cameron Green and Sam Konstas in his first eight overs.
After a sad conclusion to their previous World Test Championship cycle, in which they lost to South Africa in the final, Australia was hoping to recover going into this Test series. The Australians decided on a fresh top order after Marnus Labuschagne was dropped and Steven Smith was injured. In an attempt to score runs, Pat Cummins chose to bat first after winning the toss.
“We’ll start with a bat. It appears to be a nice wicket. Away series is never easy. Almost exactly the same as it was a few weeks ago. We would miss Smithy. At the toss, Cummins remarked, “He’s catching as well.”
In the fourth over, Shamar Joseph drew the first blood.
He caught Konstas in front with a stunning in-swinger. The opener was removed for just three after West Indies reviewed the initial not out decision and ball tracking verified it was striking the leg stump. In the tenth over, he took his second wicket. Justin Greaves was given a low catch at second slip after Joseph discovered the outer edge of Green’s bat. Josh Inglis was quickly removed by Jayden Seales with a short ball, earning him his first wicket of the day.

Australia’s innings is steadied by Khawaja and Head.
Travis Head provided strong support for Usman Khawaja, who maintained one end despite the top-order collapse. After 33 overs, the visitors’ scorecard at the time of writing was 94/3. The Australians have the necessary batting depth with captain Cummins, Beau Webster, and Alex Carey still to arrive. They would, however, rely on Head and Khawaja to lead them to a commanding position.
